High Point boys lacrosse team beats Hackettstown

Jaxon Barbalich scored a career-high five goals and Brian Gruber added two goals and two assists to lift the High Point Regional High School boys lacrosse team to its first victory of the season: a 12-10 decision over Hackettstown there Saturday afternoon, April 22.

Barbalich, a sophomore, also had an assist in the win and now owns a team-high 11 goals this spring.

Ethan Munoz and Jacob VanEuewen each totaled a goal and an assist, with Alex Sonvico, Donald Weiss and Robert VanEuewen all netting one goal.

Neeko Bassani made 10 saves to anchor the Wildcats’ defense.

High Point (1-6) was scheduled to play at North Warren at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 27.

Here is how other High Point sports teams fared last week:


Grace Meyers pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk and also went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI to help propel High Point to a 6-2 victory over Kittatinny there Friday, April 21.

The game was tied, 2-2, before High Point struck for four runs in the top of the seventh. Rachel Teague (3-for-4, two RBI, run), Mikayla Conklin (2-for-4, double, two runs) and Daphne Mathews (2-for-4, RBI) aided the 12-hit attack for the Wildcats.

High Point (6-4) was scheduled to play Newton there at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 29.


Aiden Mitchell went 2-for-4, including a home run and four RBI; Matt Sabato was 2-for-4 with an RBI; and Matt Freda went 2-for-4 with two runs to steer High Point to a 5-3 victory at Hackettstown on April 17.

The Wildcats, scheduled to play at Cherokee at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 30, are 5-3 overall and 5-1 and in first place in the Freedom Division of the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference.

Girls lacrosse

After dropping their first three contests of the season, the Wildcats won twice last week to improve to 2-5 this spring.

On Monday, April 17, the team registered a 12-6 decision at Parsippany led by Madison Tallamy (four goals, one assist), Jenna Brinck (three goals, one assist), Madison Rokosny (three goals, one assist), Jenna Volker (one goal), Sarah Wynn (one goal), Loreli Castellani (10 saves) and Kaitlyn Poust (one goal).

High Point then defeated Irvington, 9-1, at home April 20 as Rokosny and Poust each scored three goals. Tallamy added two goals and Brinck scored once. Brianna Francois and Brianna Post made two and three saves, respectively.

Boys golf

The High Point boys team improved to 8-1 with a 171-208 victory over Hopatcong at the Black Bear Golf Course in Franklin on April 20.

Brandon Bassani shot a match-low 40 followed by Roman Citro (42), Brendan Percey (44), Luke Anderson (45) and Carson Citro (46) to lead the Wildcats.
