NEWTON — When Megan Biemesderfer of Sparta first heard that she was selected to the 2017 All-New Jersey Academic Team she was surprised.
"It’s a huge honor and I still can’t quite believe I’m a member!" she said.
To her professors at Sussex County Community College, where she just graduated with a degree in Psychology, the selection was no surprise. Around campus Biemesderfer had a solid reputation as a top-notch student and a real go-getter.
Biemesderfer and others from around the state were honored at Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Day Celebration in Trenton in late May. PTK Day is a day of celebration and recognition of the state's finest community college students by New Jersey's state legislators, college presidents and faculty advisors.
The event, sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for community colleges, and the New Jersey Education Association, recognizes the newest members of the New Jersey All-State Academic Team. Each year, as part of this annual event, community college presidents raise nearly $1 million in scholarships from New Jersey’s senior institutions. These scholarships go to deserving community college students pursuing their bachelor’s degrees in New Jersey. Biemesderfer was the only representative from SCCC.
"It feels amazing to be part of this," Megan said. "The other (All-Academic) students all had so many wonderful and amazing accomplishments. It feels fantastic to be counted among them. I hope I can keep moving forward and live up to the standard of excellence that everyone there showed."
At SCCC, she certainly lived up to a quality standard that others would like to follow. Biemesderfer was in several clubs, including Adventure Club, Authors Ink (Treasurer one year, VP another), Psychology Club (attached to the Psi Beta Honor Society of which she is also a member, and VP this past year), and Anime Club, in addition to PTK. When not involved in school work, Biemesderfer works as a waitress at a local restaurant, and rides horses.
In the fall, she's heading to Stevenson University where she'll major in Human Services. Biemesderfer is also planning to take a semester abroad interning in her chosen field.
"After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Stevenson University, I plan to look for work in the Human Services field," she noted.
If her recent accomplishments are any indication of her determination, Biemesderfer will certainly achieve her goals - whatever they may be.
