Workshop for teachers at museum
OGDENSBURG - The Sterling Hill Mining Museum will hold a program for fourth to eighth-grade teachers at its Sterling Hill Institute of Geosciences in Ogdensburg July 8 and 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Teachers will provide instruction in a cross-curricular workshop involving the study of magnets and magnetic fields, that integrates science, technology, social studies, and history by using the work of Thomas Edison as its focus. Teachers will learn how magnetism played a central role in one of New Jersey’s industrial ventures of the 19th century. They will also learn now compasses are used to navigate the land and sea using the Earth’s magnetic field; how to make a compass; how numerous deposits of rich iron ore were found in New Jersey centuries ago by scientists using magnets; and how development of those deposits enabled New Jersey to lead the country in the production of iron for decades. Attendees will earn five CEUs each day. Fee is is $150 per person but a team of two teachers can attend from the same school at a discounted rate of $250.
