Woman's Club members find joy baking and sewing for others

Vernon The creed of the Vernon Township Woman’s Club features the phrase “It is the little things that create differences.” By sharing homemade goodies and handmade items with families in Sussex County, the club recently did just that. For their annual Cookie Can project, members baked dozens of homemade cookies estimated this year at 1,400 sweet treats. The cookies were packed into coffee cans, which the women had decorated with wrapping paper, wallpaper samples, ribbons, bows, buttons and other crafty items. A total of 153 cans of cookies were delivered to residents of the DASI shelter, Sussex County Homestead and Sunrise Halfway House. “Every recipient was thrilled. If only you could have seen their smiling faces and heard their glee,” said member Marilyn Olsen, who helped distribute the cookies. Sewing good deeds In another community service program, club members sew items for patients at Newton Memorial Hospital. Blankets are made for children who enter the emergency room and small handmade pillows are provided to breast cancer patients for use when traveling, as a cushion between the seatbelt and the chest. The club welcomes donations of fabric for these important projects. For more information about the club or any of its activities, call 973-764-3909 or 973-764-4609.
