Why I like birds

I’m Jenna Mengersen. I’m 8 years old and I love birds. Birds are my favorite wild animals. Do you like birds? On Dec. 3 of 2008 I was watching my bird feeder and I saw some blue jays, some other birds and a squirrel or two. I love blue jays. Blue jays are very pretty to me. Did you know blue jays don’t fly south for the winter? They also have good eyesight and sense of smell. Blue jays are mostly blue but they have white on their bellies and a little bit of white on their wings. On the back of their head is a point and they can turn their head almost all the way back. They are also noisy when they see an animal they don’t like. They like bird food a lot and eat berries, insects and other small bits of food. I also like cardinals. They are red and you can see them very easily if it’s a little dark. A cardinal’s face is black and their beak has a reddish tint to it. The female cardinal is brownish red and the male is bright red. Cardinals don’t fly south for the winter either. To me, cardinals look bigger and puffier in the winter. They also have a point on top of their head just like a blue jay. They are also good fliers. That is the reason why I like birds and I hope you learned something about them. Jenna Mengersen Vernon
