Who says there's nothing to do in Sussex County?

Sussex County has gained the reputation of a dull place where there are more silos and farm houses than people or exciting things to do. Yet after a bit of research, it’s not hard to see that Sussex County is a busy community where there is always something going on, especially things to keep teens busy. The Tristate Actors Theater, located in the historic town of Sussex, has been a staple in the area for many years. It is a professional equity theater constantly generating successful productions. For the holiday season, it is putting on the classic “A Christmas Carol.” The shows began Dec. 3 and run through Dec. 11, with discounts for students, the theater is an excellent way to spend a night out. Close to the theater are many sensibly-priced restaurants ranging from Chinese, Mexican and Italian cuisine. Dinner and a show are never far away when looking for a night out in Sussex. Laser One is a relatively new business in the area located in the town of Sussex. It is a business where children of any age at heart can play a fun game of laser tag — a great way to release energy in a safe environment. It is sure to provide a few laughs, and because the location is indoors, weather is never a problem. With winter fever bound to set in soon, an afternoon spent running around the Laser One course makes an affordable way to unleash all that cooped-up energy. The Newton Theatre, located in the historic county seat, has recently reopened. It’s one of the few movie theaters in Sussex County. Also, it is closer to home for many compared to the larger AMC Theater in Rockaway. And it’s offering cheaper tickets. That’s an appealing combination. The idea of going out to a movie is not a new way to spend a Friday night, yet the Newton Theatre is a new to Sussex County way to spend some time to see a good film. Even through there is a chill in the air, sunny winter days can be a great time to enjoy one of Sussex County’s many parks and scenic areas. They’re perfect for picnics or just as a getaway to relaxing and read a book. With the hustle and bustle of daily life, most Americans can appreciate getting to step out of the craziness every once in a while. Taking a picnic lunch in a scenic region of Sussex County like High Point State Park is a “go green” way to have fun. The snow is soon to come, and with it winter sports, but don’t rule out parks in the meantime. Don’t forget the charity work that can be done in Sussex County. There’s a soup kitchen in Newton, food pantries all over the county are in dire need of donations to fill their shelves. Consider holding a food drive and donating to one of the pantries that provide food to local people in need. Check out www.advertiser-news and search for Spread the love locally for a list of many of the pantries and organizations working on behalf of those in need. One group especially geared to get teens involved is Pass It Along. The organization’s mission is: “To awaken, validate and nourish the innate desire to ‘give back’ by mobilizing youth as community partners.” Pass It Along regularly plans dances or talent nights for seniors, invites students to spend days at local soup kitchens and organizes a myriad of other charitable events.
