Watercolor captures historic library building
The former Board of Trustees of the Sussex-Wantage Library Association commissioned the noted Sussex County artist Indrikis Kaneps to paint a watercolor of the old Sussex Wantage Library building, which had been located on 27 Bank St. in Sussex from 1972-2003. The completed work was presented to the new Sussex Wantage Library on Dec. 29, 2008. Kaneps, born in Latvia, heard about Sussex County during World War II, when he was assigned as an Army artist. A graduate of Princeton University and Columbia University School of Architecture, he worked as an architect for 12 years, moving to Sussex County to become a watercolor artist. He is a member of the New Jersey Watercolor Association and the Art in Sussex County Committee, helping to organize and conduct the art show at the Sussex County New Jersey State Fair. His commissioned work now hangs above the fireplace at the new Sussex Wantage Library. Trustees of the old Sussex Wantage Library are Madelynn Coykendall, Kathleen Katterman, Beth Ann Enhoffer, Betty Martin, Madeline Decker, Suzanne Hunt, Ann Woortman, Dolores Lain, Ruth Billow, Dottie Margarum, Joann Horovath and Peggy Checkers.
