VERNON-The Vernon Health Department said that it has received 110 doses of flu vaccine from the Vernon Township Board of Education, which had separately purchased vaccine for its teachers and staff. The department was also notified that it will receive 200 doses through vaccine reallocation. As 480 doses were originally ordered under the New Jersey state contract, this will still leave a shortfall of 170 doses. All of the vaccine received by the Vernon Health Department will be given only to Vernon residents who meet the high-risk populated as defined by CDC guidelines. A list is being compiled and those on the list will be called to confirm high-risk status. Appointments will be made with those determined to be high risk. This will be done on a first-come, first-serve basis, not a lottery system which has been used in some municipalities. Those who wish to be vaccinated should call 973-764-4055, extension 2265 and leave their names, daytime phone numbers, chronic medical conditions and ages. If the department receives more than 310 requests for vaccinations of high-risk individuals, some will not get the vaccine. The department advised everyone to follow Centers for Disease Control guidelines for preventing the spread of the flu. Avoid close contact Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
