September brought an excess of 2,877 families to Sussex County Social Services Food Pantry in search of nourishment, according to numbers compiled by the county’s social services department. The newly begun ongoing communitywide Stuff the Bus campaign tasks schools with working to alleviate the food shortage problem in Sussex County. (See related story on page 14) Kicking off the project was The Catholic School Academy of Sussex County, whose students made their donations on Tuesday, Nov. 3, filling up two buses. Carol Novrit, Director of Social Services of Sussex County was on hand to oversee the collection. “I am absolutely thrilled with the response to this program. We have seen the need for assistance grow 400 percent and we simply do not have the resources to help everyone...this campaign will help so many people this month and as the program continues, so will the assistance to others. It is a simple idea that is just brilliant and we are all so excited about the prospect of this program.” The next Stuff the Bus collection is scheduled for Dec. 16 at High Point High School and efforts are already under way to exceed Tuesday’s gathering. — Story and photos by C.G.
