Township engineer: how to prevent stormwater pollution
Vernon Simple steps can be taken to prevent pollution to the waterways from stormwater runoff, according to Vernon Township Engineer Louis Kneip. Keep in mind that all storm drains eventually discharge to a water body such as a river or lake. Pollutants that enter the stormwater drainage system will ultimately affect the water we drink and the lakes in which we swim. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has issued a pamphlet on basic things that residents can do to protect the community’s water. The following is a summary of the tips in the pamphlet: Limit the use of fertilizers and pesticides. Do not use if heavy rain is expected. Consider using organic fertilizers. Properly use and dispose of hazardous household products. Do not litter, and never dispose of any waste in the storm drains. Properly dispose of yard waste. Do not allow leaves to clog or enter storm drains. Clean up after your pet, and properly dispose of pet waste. Provide regular maintenance on your septic system, such as pumping the septic tank.
