Highland Lakes — Despite their age, size and lack of racing experience the Den 5 Tiger Cubs proved to be tough competitors at the recent Pinewood Derby held at the Highland Lakes Country Club. Cub Scout Pack 404 is comprised of Webelos, Bear, Wolf and Tiger dens. The Pinewood Derby is a time-honored tradition for Cub Scouts that dates back to 1953. Each Scout designs and crafts what he hopes will prove to be the fastest wooden race car from a 7-inch block of pine. At this year’s Derby in Highland Lakes, many of the races were very close “photo finishes” but as the checkered flag fell, Tiger Cub Nicholas Amati, 6, drove away with first place. Second-place finisher Chris Hearon, 11, of the Webelos Den, was kept busy by Tiger Cub William Douglas, 6, who sped into third place. Honorable mentions went out to Tiger Cubs Adam Weiss, 6, for sporting the best skulls on his slick race car; Daniel Gleason, 7, for crafting the coolest race car; Jeremy Fitzpatrick’s clever racer driven by Sponge Bob won best driver and Maxx Hartman, 6, was awarded most eccentric car for his especially creative paint job. Tiger Den Leader Mark Douglas said he was very happy with his Den’s success their first time out and is “very proud of all of the boys for their hard work crafting their cars.” For more information about joining the Cub Scouts or Boy Scouts go to join.ppbsa.org/membership/ or call the Patriots’ Path Council service center at 973-765-9322.
