The Rescue Round-Up

Under My Wing Avian Refuge Chico, a blue and gold macaw, was temporarily released to Under My Wing Avian Refuge from a pet store in Vernon for veterinary care (check-up, blood work, bathing, beak and nail trim) after concerned animal lovers contacted the sanctuary about the bird’s poor condition. Chico has plucked many of his feathers because of stress, and is underweight and malnourished. Also, Chico’s nails and beak are overgrown, making it hard for him to eat, groom himself, or play with his toys. The top of Chico’s beak is so long that it cuts into the bottom of his beak. Chico will be brought to Companion Animal Hospital for treatment, and depending on results, could need extended care at the sanctuary. Medical and extended care for Chico is expected to be costly. Therefore, donations are very much needed and will be greatly appreciated. Under My Wing Avian Refuge is a Franklin-based non-profit sanctuary for sick, abused, homeless, unloved, and unwanted exotic birds. The sanctuary relies solely on donations from the public to properly address the needs of the 150+ birds currently in its care, including Chico. Please send donations for Chico’s care to: Under My Wing Avian Refuge P.O. Box 233 Franklin, NJ 07416 For more information on Under My Wing Avian Refuge and their other birds, visit www.exoticbirdsrefuge.org or call 973-827-1777. Second Chance Pet Adoption League of Oak Ridge Second Chance has two dogs looking for homes this month. Gino is a 6 year-old beagle/basset hound mix who was surrendered to a local shelter. He is friendly and playful with a typical hound personality. He gets along with most other dogs, but would be best in a home without cats or small animals. Nila is an adorable and very sweet 9 year-old chihuahua looking for a lap to call her own. She has a very happy personality and is great with other small, calm dogs. These dogs and many more are available through Second Chance Pet Adoption League of Oak Ridge. For more information, please call 973-208-0191 or email NJWoof@cs.com. Visit their Web site at www.secondchance.petfinder.com for a full current list of available dogs. Adoption days are held every Sunday at the Animal Clinic of Morris Plains from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at 3009 Route 10 East, next to 5 Star Car Wash. KISS (Kitties In-need-of Someone Special) Hopatcong-based K.I.S.S. has two special kitties in need of new homes. Roxi is a 2-year-old female who became homeless when her owner died. She was placed in the local pound, but was absolutely terrified, so KISS took her in. She is doing much better with one-on-one attention and is learning to cuddle. Roxi will make a great pet, but she may need a bit more time to settle into a new home than other cats. She is in great health with a shiny coat. Phoebe is a little under a year old. She was rescued from a kill shelter and is extremely sweet and loveable. Phoebe openly shows affection and is a joy to have around. For more information on Roxi, Phoebe, or KISS’ other cats looking for homes, visit www.kiss.petfinder.com or call 973-670-2481. Noah’s Ark Animal Welfare Association Ledgewood-based Noah’s Ark chose to spotlight both a dog and cat. January is a 3 year old treeing walker coon hound who was rescued in Kentucky. She was recently diagnosed with Addison’s disease, an adrenal insufficiency. January can live a normal, active, and happy life with daily medications. January is sweet and friendly and gets along well with other dogs. Juliette is a 5 year old tabby cat. She’s very sweet and affectionate. Even though she’s not a lap cat, Juliette has lots of love to give. She loves to be brushed, petted, and especially likes a good belly rub. Juliette will let other cats know that she’s the queen of the castle; she doesn’t like to share attention with anyone else. For more information on Daisy, Juliette, and Noah’s Ark’s other animals, please visit www.noahsarknj.org or call 973-347-0378.
