Jefferson Township High School defeated Morris Hills High School (Rockaway, NJ) in varsity football on Thursday, Nov. 12.

The consolation contest turned out to be a rain soaked slugfest from beginning to end. Both teams stepped up on defense. Solid blocking and wet turf forced the offense to take a back seat.

No breakthrough to the end zone occurred until the fourth quarter. Morris Hills enabled the scoreboard to light up after kicker John Bernal booted a 26-yard field goal with less than 4 minutes to play. The kick put Morris Hills ahead by the score of 3-0.

Jefferson (5-5) responded by marching the ball down the field resulting in running back Avery Sheruda to score a touchdown from two yards out. The successful extra point kick by teammate Drew Benfatti allowed Jefferson to push ahead 7-3 with 1:21 left in regulation time.

Morris Hills (3-7) got the ball back and mounted a drive. But Jefferson's defense held steady as time ran out earning them a "W" in the win column.
