While some say that the phrase “Gentlemen only, females forbidden” is where the word “golf” came from the truth is that the word golf actually came from the Dutch word “kolf”, meaning club introduced into Scotland, the home of golf, which by the 16th century evolved into golf.
Not only do females play golf at the Crystal Springs Golf Resort, females have become top performers with one of the 3rd Crystal Springs Golf Resort Crystal Cup Members Tournament’s female participants in the event held on Tuesday, June 7, Dona Wallerius walking away with 3 prizes including top honors in the Women’s low gross category with a winning score of 81, hitting the longest drive in the Women’s category and hitting her tee shot in the closest to the pin competition to within 31 inches of the cup on hole No. 4 just to take home her 3rd victory of the day.
Buffy Whiting was the low net winner for the ladies.
Crystal Spring’s members playing in the 3nd Crystal Cup Tournament attracted a full roster of members to compete in an individual stroke play format event at New Jersey’s #1 Public Golf Course Ballyowen Golf Club with each golfer playing his or her own ball and carding their individual scores for the 18 holes. Awards were given to the top low gross and low net performers in three divisions: Men’s, Women’s, and Senior’s and points toward qualifying for the Crystal Cup Championship held at the end of the golf season.
The top low gross performance of the day was a 74 carded by Bret Trenkman to win the low gross prize in the Men’s Division. Tom Marinaro’s low net score of 65 bested the rest of the field to earn him the Men’s low net honor. Steve Van Dyke shot a low gross score of 80 and Pete DeGraff carded a low net 66 to win top honors in the Senior Division, and Donna Wallerius’ 81 was the best low gross score for the Women’s Division with Buffy Whiting shooting a low net score of 66 to win low net.
The skill event winners included John Schneider’s closest to the pin shot which landed 5 feet from the pin while Dona Wallerius captured the closest to the pin leaving her ball just 31 inches from the cup. Randy Halat was the Men’s long drive winner followed by Pete DeGraaf taking the Senior Division long drive prize and Dona Wallerius taking her 3rd prize of the event with the best performance in the Women’s Division.
