HARDYSTON — The 2017 Glenfiddich Hickory & Scotch Tournament, the 1st in a series of Crystal Springs Golf Resort hickory & Scotch golf events is one of the most popular events of the Resort’s calendar of events, and was held at Ballyowen Golf Club on June 14.
The event featured a two golfer team Shamble format in which each member of the team hits their tee shot and then plays their own ball through the hole and for the entire 18 hole event. The scores of both team members are combined to achieve a team score. The team with the lowest score is declared the winner.
When all of the scorecards were compared the team of Michael Cohen and Matt Post had recorded a combined team score of 7 under par 65 to equal the score of the team of George Mack and Tony Rodriguez. The winning Cohen/Post teamed had to be determined by a match of cards in accordance with the Rules of Golf. The third place team of Scott Dyckman and Shawn Dyckman scored a 3 under par 69.
The “Hickory” aspect of the event requires golfers to play the par 3 11th hole using vintage hickory stick golf clubs. The golfer that best executed this shot was Mike Ihanchek whose ball came to a rest 13 feet 9 inches from the hole.
A longest drive and closest to the pin contest was also held at the event. Mike Cohen hit his tee shot 7’0” from the pin on hole number 4 to take the honor on the first of two closest to the pin competitions. The second was taken by Mike Ihancheck with at tee shot that came to rest 13’9“ from the pin. The long drive winner on hole number 5 was Shawn Dychman.
Following play the golfer teams retired to Own’s Pub for an awards ceremony, a presentation on the history and making of Glenfiddich Scotch by a sponsor’s representative Jim Patterson, the sampling of a variety of Glenfiddich Scotch products and an outstanding gourmet dinner prepared by the outstanding Ballyowen food and beverage staff.
