Newton — The Sussex County Department of Human Services, Division of Senior Services encourages seniors and caregivers to take advantage of the BenefitsCheckUp® service offered by the National Council on Aging. The national organization sponsors a Web site, www.benefitscheckup.org, that offers free on-line screenings to determine a senior’s eligibility for 2,000 federal, state and local programs that can help pay for utilities, food, housing and other basic needs. The Web site also provides a link to Caring.com, which offers expert advice, practical information, easy to use tools and person-to-person support for caregivers. Individuals who do not have access to a computer or the skills required to navigate the program may call the Division of Senior Services at 973-579-0555, ext. 1224 to make an appointment to meet with a staff person who will assist with the process.
