SCCC to upgrade building’s HVAC systems
NEWTON. Sussex County Community College is awarded more than $1.1 million through an incentive program with Elizabethtown Gas.

Sussex County Community College (SCCC) has been awarded more than $1.1 million through an incentive program with Elizabethtown Gas to upgrade the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems in the Library Science Building.
The money will allow the college to replace outdated units with new, high-efficiency systems designed to deliver long-term benefits for the environment.
The improvements are expected to significantly reduce utility costs by lowering energy consumption; create a more comfortable and consistent indoor environment for students, faculty and staff; and shrink the college’s overall environmental footprint through decreased energy use.
The Library Science Building is being turned into a Learning Commons designed to support academic success and encourage collaboration.
The second-floor library, with 10,500 square feet, will be reimagined as a modern hub for innovation, exploration and student engagement.
Once complete, the new Science and Learning Commons Building will offer state-of-the-art technology, dedicated tutoring and academic advising services, and a variety of study and collaboration spaces.
Gift of $30,000
The Avondoglio family and the Perona Farms Foundation have committed to contribute $10,000 annually for the next three years.
The total gift of $30,000 will benefit the SCCC Culinary Institute by supporting the salary of a hospitality supervisor.
“We are deeply grateful to the Avondoglio family and the Perona Farms Foundation for their supportive and loyal leadership,” said SCCC Foundation executive director Stan Kula. “Their vision and generosity will help ensure the continued success of the Culinary Institute, which is training the next generation of culinary and hospitality professionals.”
Martin Kester, administrator of the Culinary Institute, said, “Perona Farms has been a strong advocate for these programs and the SCCC Culinary Institute from its inception and throughout its growth. We’re grateful for their generous support and continued partnership.”
$10,000 grant
SCCC also has received a $10,000 grant from the FirstEnergy Foundation.
The money will support the college’s Electrical Lineworker Program by providing essential climbing gear for students enrolled in the hands-on training course.
The contribution reflects FirstEnergy Foundation’s commitment to supporting workforce development, safety and education throughout the region.
The climbing equipment will enhance training opportunities and ensure that students are learning in a safe, realistic environment that mirrors industry standards.
“We are incredibly grateful for the support from the FirstEnergy Foundation,” Kula said. “Their investment in our students not only helps build a strong, skilled workforce but also shows a true dedication to safety and economic development in our community.”
The Electrical Lineworker Program at SCCC prepares students for essential roles in the utility industry.
