Register now to be part of Criminal Justice Academy
NEWTON - Registration is taking place now for Sussex County Community College’s Criminal Justice Academy, which runs July 12 to 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Criminal Justice Academy for young adults is a collaborative program between SCCC and the Sussex County law enforcement agencies. Students will be introduced to basic police operations, including: military style drills, patrol procedures, canine unit, traffic enforcement, criminal investigation, drug investigation, cyber-crimes, special weapons and tactics, handcuffing, self defense, fugitive searches, and firearm awareness. The academy will feature instructors from the New Jersey State Police, FBI, DEA, Secret Service, Sheriffs Department, Prosecutors Office, and local law enforcement. To take part, candidates must have completed his/her sophomore, junior or senior year at a Sussex County High School; be a student in good standing; be a good citizen with no criminal background; be in good physical condition to meet the required physical training; and be willing to be part of a highly disciplined curriculum. The curriculum and teaching methods are similar to a traditional law enforcement academy and provides students with an opportunity to see police-related activities from the inside. The daily sessions are not designed to certify the participants as a law enforcement officers, but will provide students with a knowledge that will effectively prepare them for civilian or law enforcement related careers. The cost is $30 per student and includes an academy t-shirt and a barbecue lunch on July 16. Students must bring a bag lunch Monday through Thursday. Students will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. All participants will receive a certificate of completion.
