New plow ready to roll

Franklin — It’s been a snowy winter. Since Jan. 1 snow removal has cost the borough of Franklin $60,503 in materials, such as salt and de-icing chemicals, and a total of $35,237 in overtime pay. But that’s not all. The borough’s 1985 International plow, on its last wheels, has been put out to pasture. At the council’s most recent meeting, members approved with mixed feelings the purchase of a new 2009 GMC 5500 at the cost of $83,709. To allay concerns about the expense, the borough’s administrator Richard Wolak quickly reminded council members that “this is a capital expenditure that will be carried over a five-year period.“ The truck should last 20 years, too, which would mean it cost the borough about $4,000 a year. The new vehicle has a stainless steel body, hydraulic pump system, safety lighting, a 10-foot plow with hitch, sander and a liquid de-icing system. It also meets the new 2010 emission standards. “The 1985 has outlived its use for snow removal but (we) hope it can be used for routine maintenance duties.” But it may not stick around, as Mike Gunderman from the DPW said that he plans to “take it off the road“ and might put it up for auction, now that the new truck has arrived.
