With stress levels heightened and finances tight, support is just one call or click away with the aid of the New Jersey Self-Help Group Clearinghouse, a free service of the St. Clare’s Health System funded by the State Division of Mental Health Services. Many self help groups exist for the sole reason of providing support to others. Topics have a vast range and some include: cancer, mental health, abuse victims, 9/11, sinus problems polio and more. Rachel Remen, M.D. wrote: “groups are of aid when problems . . . may be resolved in the community by the very people who suffer from them and therefore understand them . . . the concept of woundedness breaks down and we are all wounded healers of each other. We have earned the wisdom to heal and the ability to care.” A member of a group in New Jersey said that “attending a self-help support group has helped me to realize that I am not alone; I have received support and been able to give back through my feelings of fulfillment”.
