Newton — The Newton Veterinary Hospital is offering the first-of-its-kind Canine Influenza Vaccine, H3N8. The vaccine has been clinically proven to reduce the severity of flu symptoms and the length of time that a dog is sick. It has also been proven to be safe and well tolerated by most dogs. Just like the human flu, canine influenza is highly contagious and any dog that is exposed to other dogs is at risk. This includes dogs that go to doggie daycare or board at a kennel; attend obedience training; visit a dog groomer or dog parks; or compete in dog events. The most common sign that a dog has been infected is a persistent cough. Canine influenza only affects dogs and human flu medicine should never be given to a dog to treat the canine flu. Dogs with certain medical conditions, including immune disorders that would make any vaccine contra-indicated, should refrain from getting the flu vaccine. For more information call 973-383-4321.
