Nerds, jocks, hicks and preps
All one happy community: Wildcats celebrate homecoming with a win in new league Wantage With its football team set to face off against the Morris Hill Knights, High Point High School kicked off homecoming 2009 with a spirited performance by the Wildcat Cheerleaders to the song “Unstoppable.” And unstoppable they were. High Point scored the first touchdown of the game in the first 10 minutes and went on to win, 40-0. (See more on the game on page 15) Fans were pumped from the get-go. And football was not the only attraction that drew spectators. The halftime show, coordinated by High Point’s student council, always proves a crowd pleaser. Tradition was upheld this year, as the school’s marching band began the festivities with a medley of Abba’s “Mama Mia” and “Dancing Queen” followed by a rendition of the Beatles’ “Lady Madonna.” Next the Battle of the Classes took the field. In a fresh twist, this year’s theme was the media’s portrayal of teenage stereotypes. The Class of 2013, the freshmen, took to the field in a golf cart to symbolize the stereotype of “Preps.” The sophomore class drove onto the field in a pick-up truck, dressed in overalls and straw hats, accompanied by dogs with bandanas as the “Hicks.” The junior class, dressed as “jocks,” ran onto the field in sports uniforms, carrying sports equipment. Finally, this year’s senior class stumbled and tripped their way onto the field with taped eyeglasses and brandishing protractors portraying the stereotype of “Nerds.” By a show of overwhelming applause from the audience, the sophomore class the “Hicks” won the battle. After the winner was announced, the classes mingled together creating one big group to promote tolerance and peace. And, then, it was time for the Homecoming Queen contest. Six seniors strode onto the field on the arms of their fathers and one Alayna Donadio was crowned the winner. See photos from that competition on 17.
