NAMI-Sussex County, one of 26 county affiliates of the National Alliance on Mental Illness of New Jersey, has been awarded the 2009 NAMI-NJ Outstanding Affiliate Revitalization Efforts Award. The award was presented by NAMI-NJ’s Executive Director Sylvia Axelrod, to affiliate President Kathleen Fitzsimmons and other affiliate officers at the annual NAMI-NJ Holiday Awards Luncheon recently held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Monroe. Fitzsimmons became president of the Sussex County affiliate a year and a half ago. With the help of a core group of volunteers, she has worked hard to bring NAMI’s wide array of programs to Sussex County. Programs available in Sussex County now include NAMI’s Family-to-Family 12-week family education course; NAMI Basics, a six-week course for parents of children with mental illness; NAMI-NJ’s Law Enforcement Education Program (LEEP); and an ongoing family support group. For more information about NAMI-Sussex’s programs, call Fitzsimmons at 862-268-5846.
