Sussex — Thirty-five local tradesmen will be traveling to Galveston, Texas in January to volunteer with One Mission: Galveston. The group will donate their time and talent eight hours a day to help the people of Galveston that were devastated by Hurricane Ike in 2007. These tradesmen include electricians, carpenters, excavators, landscapers and plumbers. They are members of the Sussex Christian Reform Church, Goshen Christian Reform Church, the Beemerville Presbyterian Church and other parishes, who have volunteered for the week-long mission. While there the volunteers will work with sheetrock installation and finishing, painting, trim, siding, roofing, flooring, cabinets, and kitchen and bath repair. Three meals a day will be provided and cots to sleep on in a Galveston school building, turned barracks. “This is one way that we can outreach and help other Americans,” said Justin VanderGroef, a volunteer. One Mission: Galveston is the Christian Relief arm of Xtreme International, Inc. a faith-based organization of Virginia. One Mission is in its second year of Hurricane Ike recovery effort and has moved past most of the demolition phase in the community. The organization is now helping homeowners in the rebuilding of their homes and lives. The tradesmen only need to cover the cost of their transportation to Galveston (approximately $600 each) before Christmas. Tax deductable donations of any amount are requested for this relief effort. Donations may sent to Justin VanderGroef, 1 Shadybrook Lane, Wantage, N.J. 07461. Make checks payable to Goshen Christian Reform Church.
