Wallkill Valley FBLA advances to national level

HAMBURG — Eleven members of the Wallkill Valley Regional High School chapter of Future Business Leaders of America participated in the 2014 FBLA State Leadership Conference at the Hilton East Brunswick on March 27-28.

Members were: Julianna Alfonso, Michael Brick, Fiona Brown, Merinda Gruszecki, Michael McCurry, Samantha McCurry, Dana McKenna, Scott Mueller, Alex Stampone, Arielle Stampone, and Kaitlyn Van Dyk.The members were accompanied by Mrs. Carol Jurkouich FBLA adviser.

Members attended various leadership workshops and participated in various competitive events.

The keynote speaker, Mr. Jia Jang, addressed the 1596 New Jersey members at the opening session with his presentation “Rejection Is Awesome.” Congratulations to the following FBLA members who placed at the State Leadership Conference: Job Interview – Julianna Alfonso, 1st place; FBLA Principles & Procedures – Scott Mueller, 1st place; Battle of the Chapters – Michael Brick, Dana McKenna, Kaitlyn Van Dyk, 1st place; Public Relations – 1st place; Community Service Project – Samantha McCurry, Michael McCurry, 2nd place; Partnership with Business Project – Kaitlyn Van Dyk, Scott Mueller, 2nd place; Scrapbook – Arielle Stampone, 2nd place; Local Chapter Annual Business Report – 2nd place; Future Business Leader – Samantha McCurry, 5th place; Who’s Who in FBLA – Samantha McCurry, Honors; Gold Officer Award – Julianna Alfonso; Gold Member Award – Kaitlyn Van Dyk; Members of the Month — Dimitri Kochka-Thomas (September), Samantha McCurry (October), Michael Brick (November), Kaitlyn Van Dyk (December), Scott Mueller (January); March of Dimes – Northern Region and Overall New Jersey, 1st place; Community Service Challenge – 1st place; Largest Local Chapter Professional Division – 1st place; Chapter Website Award of Merit; Outstanding Local Chapter Adviser – Carol Jurkouich, Honors; Outstanding Chapter – 2nd place; Gold Key Chapter Award; and Gold Seal Chapter Award of Merit. The chapter also received recognition for participating in the Ronald McDonald pop-a-top collection and the March of Dimes Basket for Babies.

New Jersey FBLA honored the Wallkill Valley Business Person of the Year, Mrs. Sandy McCurry from the law offices of Morris, Downing, & Sherred, and the Wallkill Valley Business Professional of the Year, JoAnn Bartoli, the March of Dimes northern region director.

The following FBLA members will now advance to the 2014 National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, in June: Julianna Alfonso – Job Interview; FBLA Principles & Procedures – Scott Mueller; Community Service Project – Samantha McCurry; Michael McCurry; and Partnership with Business Project – Kaitlyn Van Dyk, Scott Mueller.
