Two running for Hardyston seat on Wallkill Valley school board
Hardyston. Incumbent Robert Carlson, a 30-year member of the Wallkill Valley Regional High school Board of Education is facing a challenge from Brian Silipena.
Robert Carlson
1) Why are you running for School Board?
Both my sons graduated from Wallkill Valley Regional High School. They both attended and graduated college and then were gainfully employed in the field of study they majored in. They are both successful professionals in their careers. In addition to their academic studies at Wallkill Valley, they participated in the many clubs and athletic programs the school has to offer. I want to ensure that other students coming into Wallkill Valley share and enjoy the same high school experience that they did.
2) What are the top three things you aim to accomplish if elected?
1) Right now, Wallkill Valley and its four sending districts are in a feasibility study to consider the regionalization of all five districts into one Grades K-12 Regional School District. The study has been completed and a draft has been issued. Once the final report is completed, we will have the accurate and reliable information needed to make an intelligent and informed decision on how we are to proceed forth with the regionalization. I have been a staunch proponent of regionalizating the five districts for the 30 years that I have been on the Board of Education, and believe it will offer a better education for our students and in the long run be more fiscally efficient.
2) I look to improve the Technical Trades Program offered at Wallkill Valley for the non-college bound students that opt to go to work in the construction trades or technical industry.
3) I want to ensure that the school has the adequate resources to be well run in a responsible and fiscal manner.
3) Briefly explain why you are the best candidate for this position.
I’ve been serving on the Wallkill Valley Regional High School Board of Education for the past 30 years and have attained the status of Master School Board Member and Certified School Board Leader from the NJ School Boards Association. In addition, for the past 26 years, I have served on the NJSBA Legislative Committee representing the NJ 24th Legislative District which monitors all legislation introduced in Trenton pertaining to education.
