The Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority (SCMUA) hosted its 18th annual Earth Day Celebration on April 15 at the landfill and recycling center in Lafayette.

About 265 students from Hardyston Elementary School, Merriam Avenue School in Newton, Pope John Middle School in Sparta and McKeown Elementary School in Hampton Township participated in the event.

Students rotated through eight different hands-on stations focused on recycling, solid waste disposal/landfill construction, wastewater management, watershed restoration, aquatic insects and microplastics.

Station activities were led by the SCMUA’s recycling, wastewater and administrative staff; the SCMUA-Wallkill River Watershed Management Group; Sussex County Clean Communities; ARM Group; and the AmeriCorps NJ Watershed Ambassador Program.

Sammy the Safety Seagull, the SCMUA mascot, made an appearance during the event.
