Highland Lakes hosts boat show
The sailing fleets of Highland Lakes hosted a one-day land display of the sailing fleet boats including Sunfish, Force 5, FJs, Windsurfers and Ice Boats.
Sailing and racing in Highland Lakes has a long history dating back to the 1940s. Residents and guests were able to hands-on learn about the various types of boats and fleets available. They could ask questions, have a “dry try” of different hulls and meet the fleet captains.
According to Sue Buruchian, Ladies Sunfish fleet captain, the two most important pieces of equipment to have when sailing are a life jacket and a wet whistle which can be used in a water emergency.
"Years ago, we had a boat regatta on Labor Day and we had a tornado come through,” Buruchian said.
Understandably, the regatta was canceled, boats were removed from the lake and sailors took cover.
“It was a wild scene,” she stated. “One canoe actually went airborne. “You have to respect the wind.”
A basic sailing clinic is planned for July 9 for Highland Lakes members, all ages are welcome.
