Hamburg students perform 'Princess Whatshername'

HAMBURG — Move over Broadway. The intense downpour of rain did not put a damper on the Hamburg Elementary School's opening night of the musical "Princess Whatshername" on April 15.

The cast had been practicing lines and singing songs since January and was ready to entertain parents with this comedic show about a princess who just can't seem to remember who she is.

Directed by music teacher June Tarantino, and co-directed by Barbara Green, "Princess Whatshername" is a musical filled with familiar characters such as Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, dwarves, the three bears and a plethora of musical numbers such as "Where'd Ya Get That Bling?"

Tarantino, who chose the show because of the music, lines and large cast has been in the music teaching profession for 35 years. She spent 10 years teaching at a fine arts program and two years teaching music at a Christian school before entering the public school system five years ago. This is her first year teaching at Hamburg Elementary School.

Tarantino had the task of choosing a play that the children would be interested in, and that allowed for as many students possible to participate. Try outs were open for students from fifth to eight grade. Tarantino narrowed down her choices for the musical to four and let the older children choose their favorite — "Princess Whatshername" won.

Beginning in The Misty Forest, a girl awakens but is unable to recall who she is or how she got there. She embarks on an adventure filled with classic fairy tale characters with a twist. Who knew Rumplestiltskin could rap? The mystery unravels as the amnesia stricken princess encounters the sassy fairy tale characters who provide clues to her real identity.

The actors were responsible for learning lines, song lyrics and attending rehearsals. Children were also in charge of getting their costumes together. The set was created by Hamburg School's art teacher Elizabeth Wassel.

Hamburg Elementary School held a performance for seniors on Monday, April 14 and performed for the community Tuesday and Wednesday evening.
