HAMBURG — Republicans Mark Sena and Ron Garrett are vying for their party’s nod for two seats that will be opening up on Hamburg’s Borough Council for next year. Primary elections will be held on Tuesday, June 5. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. through 8 p.m. at the Hamburg municipal building for residents living in district 1 and in the Hamburg fire department’s meeting room for those in district 2.

Come November, the successful candidates will be on the ballot for the two open seats.

Current councilman Mark Sena is running for re-election to a fifth term on the borough council, where he has served since 2001. The other seat, currently held by Chris Kelly since 2005, will be vacated as he mounts a campaign for county freeholder. (See related story on page 11)

Longtime borough resident Ron Garrett will be running to replace him.

Incumbent Sena, who has been a resident of the borough since 1988, vows “to keep the borough moving forward.” The decision to replace the position of police chief with police director, which he says was a real “home run” for the borough, took up a lot of council time last year, and now Sena says he is looking forward to bigger projects, including several road resurfacing projects, water main repair and county-mandated property revaluation. While he said these will be very costly projects, they are necessary, and his job as a councilman is “to get the best value for the taxpayer dollar.”

Council newcomer Ron Garrett failed to return calls to comment. Garrett is currently the chairman of the Hamburg’s board of public works.
