Green Hills, Ogdensburg teams among winners
POMPTON LAKES. In the Junior Solar Sprints, students design, build and race solar-powered model cars.


A couple schools from Sussex County were among the winners in the Junior Solar Sprints, a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) competition organized by Avenues in Motion.
Avenues in Motion is one of eight transportation management associations in New Jersey that address traffic congestion, safety, economic development, air quality and livability issues.
In the Junior Solar Sprints, students design, build and race solar-powered model cars.
The contest was held May 20 at Hershfield Park in Pompton Lakes.
Materials (including solar panels), instruction and professional development workshops are provided for free.
A Piece of Cake, a team from Mount Pleasant Middle School, Livingston, was the overall winner.

Dr. Medd, All Saints Catholic Academy, Bayonne.
Two teams from Marian Emmons McKeown School in Hampton Township were among the 65 that qualified for the competition. The students are taught by sixth-grade science teacher Tonya Wikander.
The teams were Lightning Lady, created by Lily Davey, Addison Garrigan, Audrina Trogani and Joey Zweig, and Bluey Mobile, created by Caitlyn Ruitenberg, Olivia Herzenberg, Dahlia Bonilla and Joey Vickery.
