Franklin students create future city

Students in Kelly Fedynich's enrichment class at Franklin Borough School were excited to participate in the national "Future City" competition at Rutgers University where more than 75 New Jersey teams participated.

The students focused on the borough of Franklin and modeled it 100 years in the future. You can see familiar things in the model such as the school, Franklin Pond, and the police station. You can also see new additions such as the mall, the OmegaCo tower, and the monorail system.

In addressing this year's waste management theme, these students invented a garbage can that scans and sorts garbage and sends it to the appropriate place through a series of underground chutes. This garbage is either recycled or burned, and the energy is used to power the city’s electricity. The city is also equipped with solar panels, geothermal heating, high-tech air pollution filters, and porous pavement 2.0.
