County MUA plans flag ceremony

LAFAYETTE — The Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority will host an American Flag Retirement Ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday, June 15, at Abbey Glen Pet Memorial Park, 187 Route 94 in Lafayette.

The ceremony will basically follow the National Convention of The American Legion “Ceremony for the Disposal of Unserviceable Flags”, per the United States Flag Code, Section 176 which states: “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

Derek and Kevin Cooke, proprietors of Abbey Glen, have offered utilizing their crematory at no charge to provide a proper and environmentally sound method to retire the flags.

Representatives from Boy Scout Troops, American Legions and Veteran’s organizations, along with local, county and state officials are invited to participate in the ceremony.
