KEEP programs will stay open
I am writing to dispel a rumor around the county. As you are aware, Gov. Christie recently submitted his proposed budget cuts for the state of NJ. In that list, he eliminated some 5.2 million dollars devoted to the NJA3 program. NJA3 is an independent nonprofit organization that supports an evidence-based network of after school programs serving over 12,000 children in over 110 schools in urban, suburban and rural communities around the state. KEEP (Kids Educational Enrichment Program), Inc. and the Vernon School District were partners with the NJA3 organization. We serve more than 120 children in Vernon through this three-way partnership. Funding to us amounted to approximately $100.000 for the year specific to this program. I believe because of this devastating cut, many are concerned or believe that KEEP itself is going out of business. This is not so. In fact, through our wonderful relations with the Vernon School District, their families, and an incredibly tremendous KEEP staff, we are not going to miss even a day. We have already transitioned our program and although it means a little higher fee for the Vernon families, we are still the least expensive, most comprehensive program for kids in the afterschool hours. The families, school, staff, and community at large have been very supportive of this transition and as always, KEEP is available to all elementary-aged children throughout Sussex County. We also serve children aged 6 weeks to 6 years in our Sparta location. As always, we bring fun and learning to the children, and peace of mind to the parents! The Sussex County community is welcome to call 973-383-2213 with any questions about any of our programs. Tricia A. Smith CEO KEEP
