SPARTA — The World Mission Gift Shop at the Sparta United Methodist Church will host a special benefit to aid the victims of Hurricane Katrina and the homeless in our area on Saturday, September 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. "With the heart-wrenching catastrophe caused by Hurricane Katrina, we want to provide whatever assistance possible to the victims there, while also helping the homeless in our own area," said Nancy VanderVeen, coordinator of the shop. Proceeds will go directly to aid Hurricane Katrina victims through the United Methodist Committee on Relief, and to the area homeless through Interfaith Hospitality Network and Samaritan Inn. The shop features gourmet coffees, teas, and chocolates, as well as quality handcrafts, including jewelry, pottery, home furnishings, clothing accessories, and toys, made by artisans around the world. All merchandise is purchased through fair trade organizations, ensuring fair wages, and no child labor or worker exploitation. Regular store hours are Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Thursdays and Fridays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The shop is located at Route 517 and Sparta Ave.
