How do you spell FUN?

Unusually deep snows did not deter the 70 Scrabble enthusiasts who turned out on Saturday, Feb. 27 for a Scrabble Scrimmage at Sussex County Community College. The event was organized by the Literacy Volunteers of Sussex County and the turnout was more than expected, considering the recent weather. But these intrepid players came to challenge their wits — and each other — to see who would become the 2010 Scrabble Champion. Young and old battled it out, in words of course, as they attempted to fill their boards, gaining points with interconnecting words forged from wooden alphabet tiles. The competition began at 2 p.m. and lasted until 4. The “Scrabblers” competed in two categories, adult and junior, and the competition was fierce. Adult and junior competitors were divided into three categories; serious, moderate and just for fun. Literacy Volunteers of Sussex County provides free, one-on-one, confidential tutoring to adults based on individual needs and goals. The program offers tutoring and tutor training: basic literacy (reading, writing, job related and life skills) and English for speakers of other languages).
