Golfers can register for fundraiser
VERNON Registrations are being accepted for the eighth annual John Cocula Memorial Golf Outing scholarship fundraiser on Friday, June 25 at the Black Bear Golf Resort in Franklin. The scholarship fund was established in 2003 to honor John Cocula, a former teacher and coach in the Passaic School District and long-time Vernon resident, for his efforts to encourage students to further their education. To date, the fund has awarded 112 scholarships, totaling $163,000. Cocula died in December 2001; the fund supports his vision “for a future where students are enriched and empowered and are able to make a better life for themselves, according to organizers. The fund provides a $1,500 scholarship for students who will attend an accredited school for higher education and is funded through private donors and the annual golf outing. “John would be proud to see these students go on to a higher education program,” said Andrea Cocula, founding member of the John Cocula Memorial Scholarship Fund and Cocula’s wife. “Together with the support of so many outstanding donors and members of the Sussex County and Bergen county communities, we will continue to honor John’s vision of helping exceptional students to further their dreams,” she said. For the 2010 academic year, the John Cocula Memorial Scholarship Fund awarded $30,000 in funds to 20 students selected from the applicants coming from Vernon and Garfield high schools and the Sussex Community College. Eligible students must be or have been enrolled in either of those schools and must attend an accredited higher education program. Selection criteria includes academic performance, letters of recommendation, participation in sports and a brief personal essay.
