Fitzgibbons named first assistant prosecutor

    VERNON - Sussex County Prosecutor David J. Weaver announced the appointment of Franklin Borough Attorney, William F. Fitzgibbons as his First Assistant Prosecutor, Filing the vacancy of Jared L. McDavit who retired on April 1 after thirty years at the Prosecutor's Office. Fitzgibbons is due to be sworn in on May 24. Fitzgibbons, a lifelong resident of Ogdensburg, attended local secondary schools, graduated from Kings College, Wilkes Barre, Pa., obtained his law degree from the University of Toledo, College of Law, Toledo, Ohio in 1972 and was admitted to the practice of law in the State of New Jersey the same year. Since 1972, he has maintained a law practice in Franklin. Weaver said that his new first assistant brings to the office a broad legal experience touching on almost every area of the law. During his years of practice, Fitzgibbons has been a municipal prosecutor and has represented several municipalities in the county, as well as local board and agencies. "His experience as municipal court prosecutor in Vernon Township for approximately twelve years, as well as other municipal courts, will bring someone with extensive experience in the criminal justice system, and a working knowledge and understanding of the interaction between the police, the prosecutor's office and the courts," Weaver said. "His comprehensive legal background will be extremely beneficial in the administrative duties of the position as well." Fitzgibbons thanked Weaver in having the faith in him to appoint his as his first assistant and said he is confident that the office will maintain a high level of professionalism. "The priorities and goals of the office are set by the prosecutor, and it is up to the staff to work hard together as a team to accomplish those goals," Fitzgibbons said. He noted that he was fortunate to have served as municipal court prosecutor in Vernon Township for many years, one of the busiest municipal courts in the county. He added, "I have a respect for the system and an understanding of the needs of our county that must be met. I will work diligently to fulfill the duties and obligations of the first assistant's position."
