The Earthfest celebration last Sunday at the PAL building off Church Street attracted large numbers of people as those from the town and surrounding areas came together to celebrate the natural beauty and community spirit of Vernon Township. Hosted by the Vernon Chamber of Commerce and the Environmental Committee, Earthfest is in its fifth year and appears to be growing in strength and popularity with each year. "This is our fifth Earthfest, and I think our best yet," said Mary Lou Cianci, administrator for Vernon Chamber of Commerce. "We have over 70 venders and a wonderful program of events with something for everyone. This is the chamber's event for the community." In addition to vendors which ranged from environmental landscapers and organic food stores to the Vernon Township Historical Society and the township's Health, Safety and Environmental Department, there was a raptor show, book readings and a presentation on hybrid cars and alternative energy sources. Musical entertainment was provided by Gaia Wolf, and a performance by the Sankofa Drum and Dance Ensemble got the audience up and dancing. Austin Carew received the Julia Schlesinger (in whose memory the event is celebrated) Award for outstanding dedication to Vernon and his tireless energy on behalf of its residents and its environs. The art work and photography of local students was on display with themes of "Views of Vernon" and "Focus on Vernon" respectively. "For me, Earthfest is all about the children because they hold the future in their hands and this event is educational and fun," said Dan Segal, vice president of the Vernon Township Chamber of Commerce.
