County YMCA hosts monthly Senior Days

HARDYSTON-The Sussex County YMCA will begin hosting monthly Senior Days from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month, starting Oct. 12. These special days will highlight activities designed especially for older adults and introduce this age group to ways they can get involved with the YMCA and their community. Each Senior Day will feature activities such as nutrition and health seminars, water aerobics and fitness classes, in addition to refreshments and lunch. “Older Americans are a vital segment of society and play an important role in our families and communities,” said Joanne Browne, program director. “We want to bring them together and encourage older adults of all fitness levels to explore some of the YMCA older adult programs so they can get fit, stay fit and stay involved.” The YMCA offers a number of programs and fitness classes designed for older adults, including arthritis aquatic exercise, senior “fit and swim,” arthritis self-management courses, “Y walking is fun,” and more. These programs are consistent with findings in the U.S surgeon general’s report on physical activity and health, which found that older adults obtain significant health benefits with a moderate amount of physical exercise. “The Sussex County YMCA strives to create a year-round atmosphere of caring and support for older adults,” added Browne. “We are not only concerned with health and fitness, but the overall well being of all individuals.” The Senior Day fee for non-members is $5 per person / $8 per senior couple; for members, $3 per person / $6 per couple. Pre-registration is required. For information, call 973-209-9622, ext. 209.
