A page one story last week about a study recommending that Sparta’s police force absorb Ogdensburg’s contained a number of errors and some disputed assertions. Below, is the correct information. Ogdensburg’s Police Chief is William Varcadipane. The figures on how much each municipality might save if Ogdensburg’s force were absorbed into Sparta’s were not complete. According to the study, one method of calculating costs indicates that Ogdensburg could save some $80,000 and Sparta stands to save about $260,000 should the two forces become one. However, by factoring in other costs and savings, the estimated figures change considerably and Ogdensburg might see a savings of between $257,000 and $285,000; Sparta would see savings of $73,000 to $100,000. According to Henry Underhill, Sparta’s business administrator, if the two municipalities shared a court, Ogdensburg would save money by not having to staff a separate court. Finally, an Ogdensburg resident opposed to the idea said that Sparta now manages DPW functions for Ogdensburg. This is not true. We regret the errors. Ghana is in West Africa and Accra is on the southern coast of the country. We had mixed them up.
