Catholic school kids show their spirit in 5K run

SPARTA Sunshine, blue skies and cool temperatures greeted over 500 participants in the Sussex County Catholic Schools second annual 5K Spirit Run held on Saturday, Sept. 19. The day began with a once-around-the-track Fun Run designed for younger kids. The main event, the 5K Spirit Run, had over 500 registered walkers and runners who completed a USATF sanctioned course that started and ended at Pope John High School and went through an area of Lake Mohawk. First to cross the finish line was Justin Scheid of Sparta with a time of 16:12. The event raised awareness and funds for the Academy of Sussex County Catholic Schools, which includes Camp Auxilium Learning Center, Immaculate Conception Regional School, St. Joseph Regional School, Reverend Brown Memorial School and Pope John XXIII High School. “The purpose of the run was to raise awareness of Sussex County Catholic Schools and share our enthusiasm and enable others to experience the pride and spirit that we enjoy every day,” said organizer Julia Campbell. Race results and times may be viewed at www.5Kspiritrun.com. Proceeds from the event will benefit a local charity as well as the enhancement of technology in the Academy schools.
