NEWTON — The next free volunteer training class for “Neighbor to Neighbor,” the friendly visitor program of the Senior Quality of Life Foundation will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 10 a.m. at Liberty Towers in Newton. SEQUAL’s Neighbor to Neighbor Program matches trained volunteers with isolated Sussex County senior citizens. The visits may include such activities as playing cards or games, sharing a hobby, and spending time in conversation. In addition to providing companionship, “the visits provide reassurance, socialization, and contact with the community,” coordinators said. Volunteers are matched with a client in their chosen geographic area. All volunteers are trained, finger-printed and background-checked and clients are screened. Qualifications include “being a compassionate and caring individual, willing to provide an isolated and homebound senior with socialization, support, and friendship,” said coordinators. Client referrals are made by public or private agencies, healthcare workers, clergy, relatives, and friends. Call Mary Adelman, Neighbor to Neighbor program coordinator at 973-940-9094 to pre-register and for additional information.
