Bovine double play

VERNON-Wayne Vaughan has been a cattle farmer his whole life on the same farm that has been in his family for six generations. Through the years he experienced the full spectrum of wonderful and tragic events that go along with farming, but until this year he has never had a cow give birth to live twins. "Though twins is not in itself an unusual event, it is for us because we have never had both survive," Vaughan said. "We are all excited, especially my grandchildren who named them Bonnie and Clyde." The original Vaughan farm on Route 94 consisted of more than 300 acres, but over the years sections were sold off for building projects like the Appalachian Motel and Butternut Estate. Though Vaughan is delighted with the arrival of the twin cows, it is not actually desirable in farming to have twins, he explained. "When you have twins, they are born sterile, so obviously you can't breed them," he said. "But we are happy to take that loss."
