Barrett Farm marker gets its own dedication

Vernon — The Vernon Township Historical Society has purchased a historic marker for the High Breeze Farm on Barrett Road and will hold a dedication ceremony on April 19 at 2 p.m. High Breeze Farm, the last farm on Wawayanda Mountain, is listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places, due to the efforts of township historian Ronald Dupont Jr. and the Society. The main house dates back to 1828. From 1860 to 1986, the 160-acre farm was home to four generations of the Barrett family. The farm never had plumbing, central heat or telephone service and until 1986 Luther J. Barrett operated High Breeze almost as a time capsule of 19th century farming. The State of New Jersey purchased the property in 1981 and added it to Wawayanda State Park. The museum will feature several new exhibits, including “Farming on Wawayanda Mountain” and artifacts from the Black Creek American Indian site. The township’s Black Creek Site and High Breeze Farm are two of our historical gems,” said Historical Society president Jessi Paladini.
