Students honored by as ‘good citizens'

SUSSEX — The Chinkchewunska Chapter of the National Daughters of the American Revolution has named the winners of its “Good Citizens Contest,” with three area seniors receiving honors. Gina Orlando was selected from Kittatinny Regional High School. Orlando will attend the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in biological basis of behavior. She plans to pursue a career as a neuropsychologist. Nicole Cusick represents Wallkill Valley Regional High School. Cusick is waiting to hear from one of the nine schools that she applied to. Nicole plans to major in journalism. Hope VandenAkker is the outstanding citizen from High Point Regional High School. VandenAkker is considering spending one year in the Americorp NCCC before heading off to college. Eventually, she plans to major in archaeology and journalism. Seniors in local high schools are eligible to enter the contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Those wishing to enter must submit their information as to their involvement in school, home, work force and their community. Next they need to write an essay on a historical subject chosen on the National level of Daughters of the American Revolution. Each student is selected based on the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. The young women were honored at the NJDAR state level luncheon in March. and were guests of honor at a recent luncheon held at the Van Bunschooten museum.
