    Miles T. Van Tassel, Jr., of Hardyston died Monday, April 21, 2014, at Care One Madison in Morristown. Miles was born in Franklin on May 18, 1936, to the late Miles T. Van Tassel Sr. and Lona M. (Taylor) Van Tassel.

    Miles was a lifelong resident of the Franklin/Hardyston area. He was employed by the New Jersey Department of Transportation for 36 1/2 years, retiring in 1997. He was a 1955 graduate of Franklin High School. Miles was an outstanding high school basketball player. He was the first basketball player in Sussex County to score over 1,000 points during his high school career.

    After high school, Miles enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served a 3-year stint of which he was extremely proud. Miles was inducted into the Sussex County Sports Hall of Fames in 2010 for his accomplishments in basketball during his high school career. He was a member of the former Samaritan Masonic Lodge No. 98 F & AM. Miles was an avid New York Yankees, New York Giants and Notre Dame football fan.

    Miles was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Betty J. (Cooper) Van Tassel, on June 12, 2013. He is survived by his children, Miles Van Tassel III and his wife, Laurie, of Vernon, Lori Van Tassel & her fiancé, Wayne, of Wantage, and Susan Olsen and her husband, James, of Lafayette; grandchildren, Alyssa and Erin Van Tassel and Taylor and Ryan Olsen; brothers, James Van Tassel and his wife, Virginia, of Franklin and John Van Tassel and his wife, Brigitte, of Florida and his sister, Bertha Canfield of Pennsylvania.

    Funeral services will be held Monday April 28, 2014 at 11 a.m. at F. John Ramsey Funeral Home, 1 Main St, Franklin. Interment will follow at North Hardyston Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in his name to St. Jude Cancer Research Hospital P.O.
