John G. Tulp of Newfoundland, N.J., passed away on Sunday, Jan. 17, 2021. He was 90.

John designed and built his home in Newfoundland, where he has lived since 1957. He enjoyed his career as a toolmaker, owner of Oxbow Tool & Die in Oak Ridge, N.J., and then Newfoundland for many years. Prior to that he was a metal stamping diemaker for Jordan Tool & Die in Pequannock, N.J., and earlier served his toolmaker apprenticeship at Mack Molding Company in Wayne, N.J., where he started as a mold operator and then quality control technician.

Earlier he had a varied career as a carpenter, mason, welder and plumber. He also briefly worked at the Morley (Custom Shop) Shirt Company in Franklin, N.J., Plastoid Corp. in Hamburg, N.J., the Butler Hard Rubber Company and Van Der Stad sawmill in Oak Ridge.

He served in the New Jersey National Guard 50th Armored Division for 18 years, achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class. John acquired his private pilot’s license and very much enjoyed flying recreationally for 10 years. He also loved music, and played the accordion, harmonica, guitar as an adult, and violin as a child.

John enjoyed antique power equipment and garden tractors, and was a member of the Blue Mountain Gas & Steam Engine Association. He was associated with the Methodist and Dutch Reformed Churches.

John was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Helen Tulp (nee Myers); older brother Harry and younger brother Alan.

He is survived by his loving wife, Gloria (nee Jennings); children, Theresa and John; brothers Albert and Orien; as well as many nieces and nephews and extended family.

A graveside service took place on Jan. 19 at the Newfoundland United Methodist Cemetery.
