Local students nominated to military academies

Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ) has nominated seven students from Sussex County to military academies for fall 2010: Sean McNamara of Newton, a student at Pope John XXIII High School, nominated to West Point and the Air force Academy Brian Philhower of Newton, a student at Kittatinny Regional High School, nominated to the Air Force Academy Parker Pierson of Lafayette, a student at Newton High School, nominated to the Naval Academy Forrest Seaman of Newton, a student at Pope John XXIII High School, nominated to West Point and the Air Force Academy Dillon White of Newton, a student at Pope John XXIII High School, nominated to the Naval Academy Steven Zappa of Newton, a student at Kittattinny Regional High School, nominated to the Naval Academy Emily Olsen of Glenwood, a student at Pope John XXIII High School, nominated to Kings Point and the Air Force Academy “Every year I have the honor of nominating New Jersey’s best and brightest young people to United States military academies and every year I am impressed by the quality of character and the commitment to service these students possess,” said Garrett. “Our military academies consistently produce the highest quality leaders because they are made up of the highest quality people and I know this year’s nominees will continue that tradition.” Application to the United States service academies - West Point, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, Merchant Marine Academy, and Coast Guard Academy - requires a nomination by a congressman or a senator. Garrett has established a nominations committee of military and civic leaders that interviews potential nominees, reviews their applications and makes recommendations for nomination.
