Fucito to be honored at Camp Glen Gray
Highly decorated scout is newest inductee to camp’s Hall of Fame’ Jefferson Township - Long-time scouter Joseph Fucito of Jefferson Township will be honored for his years of contributions to Camp Glen Gray in Mahwah on Sunday, Oct. 18 with his induction to the Camp Glen Gray Hall of Fame. Individuals are selected for Hall of Fame membership, the highest honor given by the camp, by a committee of camp supporters. This is the seventh induction ceremony and Fucito will join 18 Hall of Fame honorees. Fucito began his scouting career in West Caldwell in 1966 as a cub scout with Pack 9. Earning the Arrow of Light Award, he bridged to Boy Scout Troop 9 and achieved the Eagle Scout rank, in 1974. As a youth member of his troop, he held a variety of leadership positions which provided background for his volunteer service as an adult. He was a Webelos II Den Leader, Pack 9, followed by several years contributing to Troop 9 as assistant scoutmaster. His contributions to Camp Glen Gray and the youth it serves began with his employment at the camp as summer staff in 1975. Over the years, he held several staff leadership positions there, serving as assistant commissary director, ecology director and field sports director. Fucito served as the camp’s program director for three years. His contributions to the camp were recognized in 1977 when he was elected into the Old Guard of Glen Gray, the camp’s honor society. Fucito has also volunteered with the Cannonball District BSA in its camping efforts. He also assisted with the Essex Council BSA newsletter, “The Echo,” and served on several fundraising committees. He also spent 12 years working with the Yogi Berra Celebrity Golf Classic event, chairing the ad journal committee for the event. Through his and many others’ support, the program raised more than $1.2 million for special needs scouts. Additionally, Fucito served as Broken Arrow District BSA committee chairman for eight years and steered the group’s efforts during the consolidation of four separate BSA councils into the current Northern New Jersey Council BSA. He was also actively involved in the process surrounding the sale of Camp Glen Gray to the Bergen County Parks Department, allowing the camp to maintain its uninterrupted record of service to youth organizations from 1917 to the resent. He also helped establish the successful Broken Arrow District Haunted House fundraising event. Fucito continues his dedication to scouting as a committee member, youth leadership chairman and Eagle advisor with Troop 150 in Sparta. He is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow, scouting’s honor camper society; and holds the Camp Glen Gray Tulip Leaf Award, Wood Badge Training, the District Merit Award from Broken Arrow District, and the Silver Beaver Award from Essex Council.
